Match Report
Magdalen College School Boys-U12A vs  John Hampden Grammar School
On: Monday, 16 May 2022
Venue: at Home

It's very important for young cricketers to learn what it's like to lose games like these, as frustrating and disheartening as it can feel. This match ended up being closer than it probably should have been, but it was testament to the commitment and resilience of the players in the field that it went down to the final over.

After winning the toss and batting, our top order were sadly unable to play the straight ones properly, and after only four overs of decent (but hardly terrifying) bowling we were already four down. Raffy and Nico rebuilt the innings well, running judicious singles and taking few risks, and a better total looked on the cards when Raffy was unfortunately run out by a direct hit. With Nico falling soon after, it was left to Alex to shepherd the tail to a total approaching respectability. 93 was something to bowl at, but was probably at least 20 runs short of what we needed.

The boys then proceeded to put in a magnificent effort with the ball. Just one wide was bowled in the whole innings, and all bowlers looked threatening, but a delightful knock from the JHGS number three blunted our attack and saw them cantering towards a seemingly effortless victory at 2 for 82 after 16 overs, needing just 12 to win; only Nihal and Nico had been able to prise out wickets. Jay then came on to bowl and shattered the stumps of both set batsmen with his first and fourth balls, before Nico followed suit next over. Suddenly the pressure was on. With fielders prowling around the bat and making runs hard to come by, MCS managed to squeeze the game into its last over. Sadly for Raffy, a wild swing to the fence saw JHGS home to a 5-wicket win.

Special thanks must go to Siddhu for deputising behind the stumps at short notice, and doing a very fine job of it.
